The acute shortage of professors and lectures and pathetic condition of public sector degree colleges in the city has forced the students to take admissions in private coaching centres for preparation of their exams. Though the concerned officials haven been consistently giving assurances of appointing teachers in the colleges for last many years but the assurances have not yet been materialised, as students are paying heavy fees to private coaching centres for preparation of their exams.

Sources said that the government had announced vacancies through Sindh Public Service Commission to cater immediate need of teachers at public sector colleges but the process was not yet completed due to what they termed bureaucratic red-tape. They said that some 80000 students were enrolled in 137 colleges of Karachi where 2000 teachers were serving.

"We have only 35 professors, 300 associate professors," said an official. Sources said that faculties of commerce at various colleges had apparently been closed due to shortage of teachers. It has been learnt that there was not even a single teacher in commerce faculties of City Commerce College (Morning), 11-C 7-C colleges in Orangi Town, Metrovile College, Allama Iqbal Government Girls College, Government Boys College Konkar Village, Government Degree Boys College Jungle Shah, Government Degree Boys College Razzaqabad, Govern-ment Degree College Mangopir and others.

Official at Directorate Colleges, Sindh said that more than hundred teachers retired every year after reaching to the age of superannuation, but no matching replacements were being made in the colleges. It is pertinent to mention here that more than eight thousands students are enrolled in 137 colleges of Karachi where some 2000 teachers are serving including 35 professors, 300 associate professors. Sources said public sector colleges across province facing shortage of 4600 teachers, as about 6,000 college teachers were rendering their services against the required strength of 10,500.
